When Marie joined the AIOIC’s career counseling program last year, she was at a turning point. After leaving a job that wasn’t fulfilling, she found herself receiving cash benefits and searching for a new direction. Having worked in several industries Marie knew she wanted something different: a stable office job where she could grow, feel appreciated, and give back to her community.
Marie’s journey began with AIOIC’s Online Digital Literacy course, which she chose after earning her GED. “I wanted to refresh my mind with something new,” she explained. “Working with computers seemed like something I could really grasp.” The program became an entry point for new skills, confidence, and community.
Throughout her training, Marie received encouragement and support from staff members Molly, LeeAnn, Delema, and Michael, all of whom helped her stay motivated and focused on her goals. “They really got me thinking more about the future ahead,” she shared.
Today, Marie is working at the Minneapolis American Indian Center while continuing to build on her goals. She recently earned her driver’s license, purchased a new car, and is moving into a new home. These opportunities would not have been possible without the help of AIOIC’s financial coach, who helped Marie improve her credit score by more than 100 points over the past year.
Marie is currently planning her life next steps: enrolling in more training and completing an internship. Her mental health has improved, and she credits her success to determination, and community support. “It was really helpful to be around peers who were also trying to do better,” she said. “The world is still moving on—join it, no matter where you’re at in life.”
When asked what advice she would give to others, Marie said, “Give it a try—just try it. It’s kind of like when you don’t feel like getting out of bed, but then you end up having a great day. Push yourself. The things that scare us? Just try them.”
Marie’s biggest motivation continues to be her children and the desire to care for them spiritually and emotionally. “Make sure you have a support system,” she added. “Sometimes things can be overwhelming, but having people there for motivation is a key part of success. Always believe in yourself and put faith in something.”
Marie’s story is one of courage, persistence, and renewal—a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to start fresh and build the future you deserve.
